Disgust At MSP’s Who Claimed Back Money For Memorial Day Wreaths!
May 30, 2009
As if the public weren’t disgusted enough with politicians claiming everything from a bath plug to cleaning their moat, politicians have stooped to a new low. Fifteen lowest of the low politicians CLAIMED BACK MONEY FOR REMEMBERANCE DAY WREATHS!
The despicable members of the Scottish Parliament, from SNP, Labour and Lib Dems, were shamed into repaying the claimed back money. The money was paid to Poppyscotland and the Lady Haig Poppy Factory for the wreaths which raise money for veterans.
The wreaths were hidden under the title “running costs” and when the expenses claims were exposed some MSP’s were reluctant to hand the cash back!
SNP MSP for Lothians, Angela Constance, claimed £17.80 and offered to pay back the money immediately – shame she didn’t think of making a personal donation from her £55,000 wages eh?
An SNP spokesperson initially said, “Members lay wreaths in their official capacity on behalf of the Scottish Parliament. As the parliament supports Poppyscotland, the cost can be met from parliament resources, and it is for each elected member to determine if they wish to reclaim the cost.”
But quickly realising the public outcry that would ensue, the party leadership intervened and ALL MSP’s were told to pay the money back to the veteran’s charities. The two charities, Poppyscotland and Lady Haig Poppy Factory, are the only ones that MSPs are allowed to claim back money for.
They then said, “SNP MSPs will either be reimbursing the money or making donations equal to the cost of the wreaths to Poppyscotland.”
SNP MSP’s who claimed back the money were;
Angela Constance (£17.80)
Alasdair Allan (£21.30)
Roseanna Cunningham (£63.90)
Michael Matheson (£63.90)
Stuart McMillan (£42.60)
Gil Paterson (£17.80)
John Wilson (£35.60).
ZaNuLabour MSP’s who claimed were;
Helen Eadie (£170.42)
Rhona Brankin (£42.60)
Trish Godman (£113.22)
Cathy Jamieson (£42.60)
Lib. Dems who claimed back the money were;
Robert Brown (£20.30)
Ross Finnie (£118.13)
Jamie Stone (£42)
Jim Tolson (£63.90)
The MSP’s decided to pay the money back to the parliament and a spokesperson claimed that MSP’s have a right to reclaim the money as they are representatives of the parliament.
A Labour spokesperson said, “MSPs lay wreaths on behalf of the Scottish Parliament. The money for the wreaths goes to Poppyscotland that funds care for veterans. Some MSPs have many remembrance ceremonies in their constituency and it has been traditional for the local parliamentarian to send a wreath for them.
“These funds have been claimed legitimately, but Labour members have decided to pay the money back to avoid any embarrassment to Poppyscotland.” You mean avoid any embarrassment to yourselves then.
Ms Rhona Brankin said: “While I have acted in accordance with Scottish Parliament rules, the last thing I would want to do is cause offence to the Scottish Poppy Appeal, the Royal British Legion or my constituents.”
A spokesperson for the Lib. Dems said, “The MSPs in question attended these important ceremonies in their official capacities but will, nonetheless, repay the amount claimed.”
The Tories and Greens didn’t claim back money for the Memorial Day wreaths but David Mundell did claim back the money before the ban on claiming back money for Memorial Day wreaths in 2004.
James Gray, Conservative, also tried to claim back money and complained he was “£60 out of pocket” after he had to buy three wreaths to lay in his constituency.
Most of the wreaths at the centre of the scandal come from the Lady Haig Poppy Factory which makes special wreaths for MSP’s. The wreaths have a purple centre to show that they have come from the Scottish parliament.
A newspaper in Scotland supported two Lib. Dems in their efforts to condemn the British National Party in Scotland for using THEIR OWN MONEY to buy Memorial Day wreaths and laying them at cenotaphs at ceremonies throughout Scotland.
The Dunfermline Press lambasted our party for supporting our armed forces that courageously fought and sacrificed their lives for our freedom from oppression. The lives that were generously given by all soldiers. From WWI to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, soldiers are still paying for our freedoms with their lives and like all decent people; we wanted to pay tribute to those courageous men and women who paid the price of their lives for us to live freely.
Not only did the British National Party in Scotland pay for the wreaths out of our own pocket but we also donated money to the worthwhile cause of helping those who still remain unlike those who pretend to pay tribute to those who have fallen by laying a wreath then go back to the office and fill out a claims form so they aren’t “out of pocket”.
When we say we support our armed forces – we mean it!
