Highlands 15th May 2009

As the weather changed for the worse after a great spell, just their luck! Gary Raikes (leading Scottish MEP candidate) and John S Robertson went to meet the public.
The first port of call was a thriving small city called Elgin which rests in Morayshire, the pleasant mini climate basin making it an ideal location for the Royal Air Force bases of Kinloss and Lossiemouth, there is a very large proportion of service men that when finished serving their country return to this area to settle and bring up their families. Speaking to a few the reason was clear that it was quality of life…the reason being the “South” had become an over populated rat race these people had voted with their feet. The pair now inspired by their findings walked around the town centre distributing “The Voice of Freedom” and campaign leaflets and all were received well.
The duo then went west to the market town of Forres where they first viewed the “Seodno Stone” a 9th century 20’ stone monolith with various carvings including a massive Celtic cross on one side said to depict a battle fought there many moons ago. This is a reminder that our deep-rooted history should never be forgotten nor rewritten.
There was limited success there due to the main market street being empty due to the rise of the “Supermarkets” this was commented on by various persons. There was one misguided person who called his female companion shouting “Joan, Joan, fascists are walking the streets” the panic in his voice gave our pair the laugh of the day!

After a brief stop in Nairn to hand out a few leaflets it was onwards past Culloden which was the place of the last battle ever fought in the United Kingdom, so well have we defended these lands…

There ahead lay Inverness the Highland Capital, a very conservative town with leanings towards the Scottish Nationalist Party however great reception was given especially by the older folk who were interested to hear what the British National Party was going to do for them, good result! Hundreds of leaflets along with free copies of the “Voice of Freedom “ were directly handed to a very receptive population. Powering on through the now crowded city centre stopping of course to admire the grand buildings, which gives Inverness, it’s identity, at a pedestrian intersection there were a delegation of UNISON activists handing out anti BNP propaganda.
This is hard to comprehend, why should a trade union be so interested in spreading lies about a legitimate political party instead of supporting their own chosen party? Needless to say they were amazed when our two asked for a leaflet! They recoiled to see a pleasant and polite pair of well-dressed BNP persons, what did they expect? One of their other helpers who was “suitably” attired in a denim jacket, that like the occupant required a wash, asked the now bemused pair would they like to sign some kind of petition…ho ho request denied, politely of course, he then left retaking his position leaning against a shop window.
The two women recommenced their frantic pushing leaflets in to the hands of uninterested passer-by’s. It was not hard to obtain a copy, the rubbish bins not yards away were full of them!

All in all a successful day with more of the good word spread!
